Initial research and thoughts

MMA Research

Which music magazine do you think your artist's album would be most likely to be advertised in and why?

Examples of popular music magazines

After the research i did about information relating to music magazines, I came across one particular magazine which i though was the most appealing/suitable for my chosen artist anbd sing, The chosen music magazine is called MixMag, MixMag is a magazine that focuses on electronic and clubbing music which is suitable for my genre, MixMag are the world biggest dance and electronic music magazine targeting usually 15 to 30 years-old people, they host club nights and events, which is provine to being a popular activity within the teenagers community, i also achknowledge that they circulate frequently, which means that my artist would be promoted for example, a time period like a month or two which is enough time to capture my target audiences attention.

I also did a more detailed research on MixMag target audience and from the image below i can draw that there is a high percentage of males that read Mixmag as males make up 72% of the readership. Females however only make up a tiny 28% in comparison to the boys. Also we can tell that the average mixmag reader is in their mid twenties and enjoys buying clothe, mobile phones, mp3 players, music and on nights out."

Mixmag magazine are mainly the magazine I can relate to because they work on dance music for clubs, festivals etc. The magazine which has been launched in 1982 covers the newest dance events, hottest music and club night reviews. When first issued, Mixmag was in a newsletter format however when house music began, the editor and DJ Dave Seaman turned the magazine to a DJ's magazine covering a variety of dance music, introducing the magazine to a club culture.

The magazine, which reached a circulation of up to 70,000 copies during the height of the popularity of acid house, was later sold to EMAP Ltd. in the mid-1990s, and then bought by Development Hell.

Whilst researching magazine genres, I also looked into indie genres of magazines. One of the magazines I looked at was NME. NME stands for New Musical Express; it is a British magazine which mainly focuses on the Indie music scene. Its audience is more of a genre based than age range, writing for fans of the indie genre.

This image is taken from an NME cover, featuring M.I.A. The cover is a Medium Close up of the artist. The model is showing an edgy pose which is a recurring theme. The house style is also simple and effective, which makes the bold image stand out. The backdrop of a simple tinted colour is also a convention of a indie magazine. I personally think that this cover works and is effective as an indie magazine should be.

There are also many conventions I found out that you need to include in an indie magazine. As i was researching this topic, i found an image which clearly points out a number of them.

Looking into a page of another music magazine the first thing which catches my attention on this double page spread are the 5 images. Each image represents a party setting. On three of the images we can see people smiling, dancing or even making peace hand gestures which symbolizes to us that they are having fun and ejoying themselves. As a result,i thinking from an audince aspect think positively about clubbing and think that it is a good option to choose. The image on the far bottom right presents a POV image which shows a closeup of a young adult dancing. By the image being taken form a point of view perspective, it makes us seem as if we are there on the dancefloor when looking at the image which makes us more interacted with the magazine. Furthermore, this image is slightly blurry which signifies to us that the person is still in motion when the image was taken.

Here is a collection of images of existing music magazine advertisement and this shows that there was a depth research that took place for this
